Broom dancing is found all over the country, but the specific elements of the dance and a what occasions it was performed vary.
On Dartmoor there are two specific occasions that are mentioned when broom dancing was performed: one was by women, particularly at harvest time; and the other was by children, who were taught it at school1 as PE (physical exercise).
Today you can see broom dancing at the Dartmoor Folk Festival each year where there is a workshop and a children's competition.
